Diwali 2015

Also known as the Festival of lights, Diwali or Deepavali is celebrated across India and in many places across the globe. In the year 2015, the festival will be on November 10th or November 11th. The split is based on the observance of the festival in different states across India. It usually falls between second half of October to first half of November every year.

Diwali, the five-day festivals of lights has begun and you can see all the cheerful atmosphere everywhere. Decorated lanterns, busting crackers, igniting diyas are a common sight, witnessed in every household every day during this festival.This five-day festival begins with Dhanteras and ends with Bhai Duj. The festival is celebrated to mark the victory of good over evil.

Diwali Rangoli

Drawing rangoli is a tradition that has been passed on from many generations. Initially the diwali rangoli designs were drawn with rice flour, so small birds, insects etc can feed on them. Nowadays diwali rangoli has become an art, many competitions are held throughout India to inspire the young and the old.

Dahi Handi is an Indian festival, celebrated every August/September, that involves making a human pyramid and breaking an earthen pot filled with curd tied at a convenient height. This event is based on the legend of the child-god Krishna stealing butter. A participant in this festival is called a govinda or govinda pathak. It is mostly popular in the state of Maharashtra and Mumbai. It is part of the main festival Gokulashtami, which is known as Krishna Janmashtami in the rest of the country, and celebrates the birth of Krishna. This is celebrated on the next of Krishna Janmashtami.
